I spent the weekend planning with some friends, and I think weโre ready to go! Each year I do an overview of our basic daily schedule by grade level.
Hopefully this will help those of you who wonder how many times per week we do certain subjects, and how long we spend on each one as well.
In our state weโre required to do 172 days per year averaging 4 hours per day for any students 6 years or older. And this year that applies to all of my kiddos! Iโm expecting it to be a crazy year, but hopefully with everything planned out it wonโt be too bad.
Iโm going to start off sharing Miss Lady Bugโs schedule today. Sheโs currently 6 years old, sheโll turn 7 in November! Eeek! Sheโs starting first grade this year and hereโs her line up:

Hereโs our Basic Kindergarten Schedule:
- 8:30am โ Breakfast / Family Devotion Time
- 9:00am โ Calendar Time & Daily Learning Notebook
- 9:15am โ Bible
- 9:30am โ Math
- 10:20am โ Phonics
- 10:40am โ Language/Grammar
- 11:00am โ Spelling
- 11:20am โ Reading
- 11:45am โ Vocabulary
- 12:15pm โ Lunch
- 1:00pm โ History (M/T), Science (W,TH)
- 2:00pm โ Art (Tues), Music (Wed), Piano (Thurs)
- 2:30pm โ Typing (Mon), Literature (Tues/Wed)
- 5:00pm โ Sports start! Sheโs currently doing inline hockey on M/W and Swimming on T/Th. And yes, weโre tired.
As youโll notice her schedule is pretty packed, so weโll see how it goes. If sheโs overwhelmed Iโll probably eliminate some of her electives. She really wants to try typing and piano this year. And so if sheโs ready for it cool, if not weโll pick it back up next year.
We also do an options program on Fridays, so they get to do a lot of fun elective type classes such as art, music, PE, science, & Spanish. She enjoys a day with friends, and I get to enjoy a day off! It does provide a challenge when fitting our normal curriculum into 4 days per week, and so I either eliminate some lessons, or fit our curriculum into our available days which means we double up on some lessons.
Stay tuned for our upcoming daily homeschool schedules for 4th, 6th, and 7th grades!
If youโd like to see what curriculum sheโs using this year, make sure to check out our 2015-2016 curriculum post!
I would love to know what you use for piano!
Hi Sarah,
We’re using this program this year:

Hi Erica,
In your curriculum listed for your first grader you didn’t list anything for Language/Grammar but you have a daily spot for it in your daily schedule. I am wondering what you are using for this?
Thanks,
Hi Suellen,
The Language grammar for my 1st grader is the Abeka Language 1 and the Abeka Letters & Sounds 1.
Hi Erica-
What does a calendar/daily learning notebook look like for a 1st or 2nd grader? Thanks!

Just wondering… do you have a break/recess at all in the morning? Or do you find that it works okay to work right through until lunch as long as they are kept busy? We are entering grade 1 this year, and I haven’t really done much in the way of recess because I find it’s hard to get every back to work afterwards, but it also makes for a long morning. ๐ What do you think? Thanks.
Hi Erica,
I’m wondering, how well do All About Spelling and Spelling you see work together? We are currently using All About Spelling. My current firstie sort of “tags along” with us for now. Thanks!
I usually do the teaching lesson from AAS, and then the SYS lesson is an independent worksheet they do. I kind of treat it like handwriting because it’s mostly copy work. But I do like to have the phonics lessons in there as well because when they’re young I think its important to learn those sounds.
Thank you so much for all of the help you are giving to other homeschoolers. I know I really appreciate it.
Thank you! This daily schedule plan is direct, simple, easy, and detailed.
What do you use to teach typing for a 6 year old?
Hi Simona, I probably wouldn’t start teaching typing to a 6 year old, they aren’t quite ready to learn that skill in my opinion. They’re still focusing on learning to read. But if you must, we use https://www.typing.com/ which is a free online program. There are others out there that are more game-like that may work better for a younger student. Here’s a link to the typing forum as well that might provide you with more information: http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/blog/2013/05/homeschool-typing-curriculum-forum.html
I was wondering if you can make suggestions on homeschooling at night? Would that work? I work during the day 7-3:30 and I really dont want her going to school with the covid 19.
Hi Jennifer,
You’ll want to check your state for homeschooling requirements, http://www.hslda.org is a great resource. But from what I know it doesn’t matter what time you do school, just as long as you get it done ๐
Wow the schedule seems excessive. But each family has their own flow.
Yes, for sure! Every family is different. That’s the beauty of homeschooling, we can choose what works best for our own families and children ๐
